This ermita (chapel), is located in the mountains near Bérchules: specifically, in the area known to locals as Cortes, or the cortijo del cura (priest’s farmhouse). It was given this name because for many years the building was inhabited by a priest, who presided over the religious rites at the chapel that stands alongside the farmhouse. Some of the municipality’s residents were married at this chapel, as they lived on their farms throughout the year and only travelled to the village if there was an emergency, or to attend the festivals.
This chapel originally had a small bell and an altar consisting of a table with a crucifix and a copy of the Gospel. Interestingly, Cortes once formed part of the municipality of Narila; however, Narila reached an agreement with Bérchules to cede ownership of Cortes in exchange for a bell!
