Before the square was built, the village was cut in two by a ravine. Access was provided by a little footpath that ran directly below, known as the “Vereíca de Misa”. It was given this name because it was the footpath used by locals to take part in religious activities.
When the square was built, the locals dubbed it the “bullring”, as it was used for bullfighting and similar activities during the festival of San Marco and San Isidro and the festival of San Pantaléon. Nowadays it is commonly referred to as the plaza del pescao, as it is home to the fish market, although its official name is Plaza de Abastos.
