This is the best-known square in the village and is commonly referred to as the plaza de la iglesia (church square). It is also the place where New Year’s Eve is celebrated in August. The square is named after a bishop who was born in this village. Esta plaza lleva el apellido de un obispo nacido en el municipio.
As mentioned earlier, it is also the place where people gather in August to eat the 12 grapes and celebrate the arrival of the “Bérchules New Year” with much merriment.
In this square there is a small hole in the wall of one of the houses, containing a painting. This painting represents the ánimas: the spirits of deceased people whose souls need to be purified before they can enter heaven. Our prayers can help with this process, and to give thanks for our assistance, the ánimas usually grant the requests of those who pray for them. They are highly venerated by the residents of the village.
