Sierra Nevada National Park covers an area of 85,883 hectares, straddling the provinces of Granada (65%) and Almería (35%). It extends across the regions of La Alpujarra, El Marquesado and Valle de Lecrín, and forms part of Spain’s network of national parks. Thanks to the inclusion of the Sierra Nevada, Mediterranean high-mountain ecosystems, which were previously unrepresented, now form part of the national park network. The Sierra Nevada was declared a national park in order to:
– Protect the integrity of its ecosystems, which are an extraordinary example of Mediterranean highland and high-mountain systems.
– Ensure the conservation and recovery (where applicable) of habitats and species.
– Contribute to the protection, development and promotion of its cultural values.
– Promote the sustainable development of population centres that fall (wholly or partially) within the national park. – Incorporate a representative example of Mediterranean highland ecosystems into the country’s natural heritage, and include the Sierra Nevada in national and international biodiversity conservation programmes.
