"Sulayr"—the Mountain of the Sun—is the name the Arabs gave to the Sierra Nevada, and it has been chosen for Spain's largest circular trail. Reviving the ancient name of Sulayr has also meant rescuing countless mountain paths from oblivion. Following these routes—which weave across the mid-mountain slopes between the peaks and the villages—we traverse 300 kilometers around this unique mountain. We walk along old muleteer tracks and forestry roads—traditional paths used by the various cultures that settled in the foothills throughout their time in the Sierra. This circular trail rings the entire Sierra Nevada massif at an average elevation of 1,800 to 2,000 meters. It crosses ridges and ravines, forests and meadows that serve as habitats for numerous plant and animal species, and where traces of past agricultural and livestock farming activities can still be found. All of this makes the journey an unforgettable experience. The section from Bérchules to Valor constitutes Stage 8 (or the passage through Fuente del Espino/Bérchules). It is a mountain route of moderate difficulty, spanning 10 to 15 kilometers along its main mid-to-high mountain connections. The route involves a significant cumulative elevation gain (up to 600–800 meters, depending on whether you begin the ascent from the town center or join directly via the upper forestry track). It offers extraordinary panoramic views of the deep valleys of La Alpujarra and the terraced slopes, as well as vistas stretching toward the southernmost mountain ranges on clear days.
